Robben Island is 14 kilometers from Cape Town and home to the prison that held Nelson Mandela for 18 years of his 27 years of incarceration. Whenever I think of Mandela I think of the 1988 'Free Nelson Mandela' concert at Wembley that I stumped up for a ticket to. There were loads of good bands playing - Everyone from the Eurythmics to the Bee Gees, even Stevie Wonder was there. Apparently Stevie couldn't see the point of the concert at first :) and had only agreed to it 2 days before the actual event. But by then Whitney Houston had taken up the slack, so the two of them ended up having to share their 25 minutes on stage - Whitney was fuming about it and was seen flouncing off shouting "I have nothing, nothing'. Plus even worse one of the guitarists of Dire Straits had just had twin girls so they had to bring in some other joker to fill his spot and if Eric Clapton thought he was as good as Jack Sonni - then he can think again. Although I did turn to my friends and say - he's not as good normally but I have to agree - he was wonderful tonight.
